The Department of Physics is in the Thrikkakara campus of the Cochin University, which is about 15 Kms from the heart of Cochin city. As one of the largest and popular city in Southern India, Cochin is well served by a good transport system. This page aims to highlight how easy it is to get to Cochin, and inform you about some of the things you can expect to see when you are here. Also you can get enough information to get around the campus.
The main traffic route into the Department and University is the NH47 from Ernakulam (Cochin, Kochi) which is passing through Alwaye. From NH47, follow the University sign to the right (if coming from Ernakulam) or left (if coming from Alwaye) at the SOUTH KALAMASSERY traffic island. The Department of Physics is just 1.5 km from there. After entering the University campus, exit from the main way at third turn to the left, the department is on the right side (see the campus map). The local bus service provide a convenient way of moving between the University and the city (Ernakulam and Alwaye). If you are traveling by one of these buses, you have to get down at "South Kalamassery Bus Stop". From there you can either walk (15 minutes) to the campus or take a three wheeler (around 15 rupees). Most of the long route state transport services (KSRTC) and other interstate bus servises has a request stop at the Cochin University Junction at South Kalamassery.
By Rail
Cochin is well connected to all major destinations in India by a good rail network. There are three railway stations close to the University. Two of them Ernakulam Junction (South) and Ernakulam North Station are on the southern side of the campus. If you are coming from the south, you can get down at one of these stations. You can get a taxi (for around Rs. 200/-) or bus (around Rs. 5/-) to get to the university. If coming by bus, take the bus to ALWAYE and get down at the "South Kalamassery" bus stop. The third railway station "ALWAYE" is on the northern side of the campus. If you are coming from the north you can get down either at Alwaye or at any of the stations mentioned above. From Alwaye, you can get a taxi or bus to the university. If coming by bus, take the bus to ERNAKULAM and get down at the "South Kalamassery" bus stop.
By Air
The Cochin International Airport is located just about 20 kms away from the campus. It is well connected to several domestic and international destinations. You can use the pre-paid taxi service available at the arrival terminal to reach the campus (around Rs. 400/-).
