PhD in Physics

Our PhD program guides each student to do independent research in their field of choice and interest. After completing the coursework, the candidate can use the research facilities at the University and associated centres to do their research in trending areas leading to the award of the doctoral degree. Over the past five decades, the Department has produced more than 250 PhDs and 1200 research publications. In recent years, the researchers have been placed as postdoctoral fellows in renowned institutions like Cambridge University, University of Manchester, Max Planck Institute, Fermilab etc.

Eligibility

Candidates seeking registration for the Ph.D. programme shall hold a masters degree in Physics from a recognized university with 50% marks in the qualifying examination provided that candidates belonging to SC/ST communities shall be eligible for concession up to 10% and provided further that candidates who have been teachers at least for the last five years in a college affiliated to any one of the universities in Kerala will be eligible for a concession up to 5% in the minimum eligible mark. Selection is made through a Department Admission Test (DAT). Candidates who have passed UGC/CSIR or similar national tests are exempted from the DAT.

Application Procedure

Candidates seeking registration for the Doctoral programme as full-time/part-time student are advised to ascertain the areas of research and the availability of vacancies under their proposing Supervising Guide in the department before obtaining the application forms in response to the Notification issued by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), except in the case of candidates who are exempted from writing the DAT. The application shall be submitted along with the consent of the Supervising Guide, to the Head of the Department of Physics along with the prescribed fee.
