Dr K. P. Vijayakumar completed his MSc in 1977 and Ph.D in 1984. He demonstrated his high standards of teaching as a Lecturer in Department of Physics, St.Albert's College, Cochin[1979-1987] and joined as a Reader [1987-1995] and finally as Professor in Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin. After his retirement in 2014, he is pursuing research as Emeritus Scientist, with assistance from CSIR.
From 1990 he was Coordinator of SAP Programme sanctioned to the department by UGC starting from DRS level to CAS level till retirement. He is also very active in public awareness programmes and was the Hon Director of "Center for Rural Development and Appropriate Technology [RUDAT]", Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin [1999-2001]. He was the Head of the Department, Department of Physics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin [2002-2004].
He published more than 110 journal papers and 152 conference papers. He is also an active member in Professional Bodies & National Committees/Consultancy and has visited foreign universities as visiting faculty. Today he is an active beehive of research on Photovoltaic and has produced 19 Ph.D's and still guiding 6 students. He handled 22 research projects with the vision to transform students into competent and motivated researchers. His research focus and specialization is in the area of development and characterization of thin film solar cells and transparent conducting oxide films, using wide variety of frontier materials by non vacuum methods specifically Chemical Spray Pyrolysis.
